Free Government Tablet Eligibility in 2026

Start with Lifeline qualification, not the tablet promise.

If you receive SNAP, Medicaid, SSI, certain housing or veterans benefits, or meet the Lifeline income limit, you may qualify for Lifeline. That eligibility can help you explore tablet offers, but it does not automatically guarantee a free device.

01 / TWO MAIN ROUTES

You do not need to qualify every way.

Standard Lifeline eligibility generally starts with either participation in an accepted government assistance program or household income within the applicable limit.

A
PROGRAM-BASED

Qualify through an accepted benefit program

You, your child, dependent, or another qualifying member of your household may participate in an accepted program such as SNAP or Medicaid.

B
INCOME-BASED

Qualify through household income

If you do not participate in a qualifying program, household income at or below 135% of the applicable Federal Poverty Guidelines may qualify.

HOUSING

FPHA

Federal Public Housing Assistance includes qualifying housing programs such as Section 8 Housing Choice Vouchers and public housing.

05
VETERANS

Pension / Survivors Benefit

Veterans Pension and Survivors Benefit is an accepted Lifeline qualification program. Veteran status alone should not be treated as automatic eligibility.

06
QUALIFYING TRIBAL LANDS

Tribal programs

Additional qualification routes can include BIA General Assistance, Tribal TANF, qualifying Head Start and the Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations.

03 / INCOME QUALIFICATION

No qualifying program? Income may still work.

In 2026, standard Lifeline income eligibility is available when household income is at or below 135% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines.

Your actual dollar limit depends on household size and whether you live in the 48 contiguous states and D.C., Alaska, or Hawaii.

ONE BENEFIT
04 / HOUSEHOLD RULE

Lifeline is limited to one benefit per household.

A household generally means people who live together and share income and expenses. Lifeline is limited to one discount per household, not one discount per person.

Same address does not always mean same household

People living at the same address may be separate households if they do not share income and expenses. USAC may require the Lifeline Household Worksheet in that situation.

05 / IF PROOF IS REQUESTED

Be ready to show why you qualify.

Lifeline may be able to verify eligibility automatically. If it cannot, you may be asked for documentation.

A PROGRAM PROOF

Show current program participation

An official benefit statement, approval letter or other program document may be requested.

Your name or dependent’s name
Name of the qualifying program
Current participation information
B INCOME PROOF

Show household income when needed

Examples can include a recent tax return or consecutive pay statements when income cannot be verified another way.

Your name
Income amount
Recent documentation
PRIVACY

Submit eligibility documents only through the appropriate Lifeline application process or a legitimate participating company. Do not send sensitive documents simply because an unfamiliar website advertises a “free government tablet.”

06
AFTER YOU CHECK ELIGIBILITY

Qualified? Then move to the application.

Approval for Lifeline and availability of a tablet are separate steps. Complete the proper Lifeline process first, then verify any device offer and its provider terms.
