How to Apply for Lifeline in 2026
Looking for a “free government tablet application”?
Start with the program that may establish your eligibility. Lifeline is a federal phone and internet benefit, not an automatic tablet giveaway. Apply for Lifeline correctly first, then check any separate tablet offer from a participating company or other assistance source.
Check eligibility before sending documents.
Lifeline eligibility can come through a qualifying program such as SNAP or Medicaid, through household income, or through another accepted qualification route.
Knowing why you qualify makes the application easier and helps you prepare the right information if additional proof is requested.
Check Lifeline eligibility →Choose your application route.
USAC currently provides three standard ways to apply for Lifeline. The qualification rules do not change simply because you choose a different application method.
Apply online
Complete the official Lifeline application online and provide any additional information requested during the qualification process.
Official Lifeline application information ↗Apply with help from a company
A participating Lifeline phone or internet company can help you complete the application process. Qualification still needs to be confirmed through the appropriate Lifeline system.
Apply by mail
If online application is not convenient, complete the official paper Lifeline application and include any supporting documents that are requested.

Oregon or Texas? Use your state process.
USAC currently directs Lifeline applicants in Oregon and Texas to their state websites rather than the standard online Lifeline application route.
Because application procedures can change, confirm the current route on the official Lifeline Support website before submitting personal information.
What should you have ready?
You do not need to upload every possible document in advance. Start with accurate identity and household information. The Lifeline system will tell you if additional proof is needed.
Use your name as it appears on official documents.
Enter your correct month, day and year of birth.
The application may request the last four digits of your Social Security Number or your Tribal ID number.
Provide the address where you physically live. Lifeline also provides options for people without a permanent address.
Know whether you are qualifying through an assistance program, income, or another accepted route.
You may need an official benefit document or income documentation if your eligibility cannot be verified automatically.
You may also need their full name, date of birth and identifying information when their program participation is being used to establish eligibility.
Approval comes before the tablet offer.
Keep the federal benefit and the device offer as two separate decisions.
Choose a participating Lifeline company
Once your Lifeline application is approved, sign up with a participating phone or internet company that serves your area.
Review the tablet separately
If a company advertises a free, low-cost or discounted tablet, check the device price, availability, location requirements and service terms before enrolling.
Compare tablet providers →Protect your information while applying.
Lifeline applications involve personal information. Do not send identity or benefits documents to an unfamiliar website simply because it uses phrases such as “government tablet,” “EBT tablet,” or “instant approval.”
Need help with a Lifeline application?
The Lifeline Support Center can help with application status, qualification documents and other Lifeline application questions.
If Lifeline asks for additional proof, use the official supporting-document guidance rather than guessing which records to send.
